Hudson Valley Wedding – 4 Fun and Unique Twists for Your Unity Candle Ceremony

Hudson Valley Wedding – 4 Fun and Unique Twists for Your Unity Candle Ceremony

One of the central Christian wedding traditions is the lighting of the unity candle. This is a ceremony where the couple will light one large candle from two smaller family candles that have usually been lit by the mothers. It is a beautiful way to highlight how the two families become one and incorporating this ceremony to your wedding is a great idea. But you can also add your own unique twist to the ceremony with these following ideas.

1. Planting a Tree Together

Instead of lighting a candle, you could plant a little tree or other similar plant together. A tree is a great symbol for strength, love and union and it is going to be an everlasting memory for everyone involved in the wedding.

During the ceremony you can just plant a little seedling in a pot, which you can then move on to your desired location. It might be a nice idea to use a tree or a plant from your family homes.

2. Tie the Knot Together

The famous saying ‘tying the knot’ actually comes from an age-old wedding tradition. It used to be customary for couples to tie their hands together with a rope or a scarf during the wedding ceremony.

You could add a little twist to this tradition by tying a little knot together. It could be two long ropes and you could turn it into a longer tradition. Each wedding anniversary you can tie another knot to celebrate your years together.

3. Create a Wooden Box of Unity Together

Some couples also make their own wooden box of unity. To do this, you’ll need a good bottle of wine, two small wine glasses and a wooden box to store these items. During the ceremony you’ll place the items into the wooden box. You’ll also place a letter from the bride and groom to each other inside the box. Each member of the family will then hammer a nail to seal the box.

The idea is that if the couple ever faces hard times, they need to open the box and finish the bottle of wine while talking about their relationship. It is a beautiful reminder of the union you two have made and a way to remember the love you two have for each other.

4. Unite Colored Sand Together

You don’t need to light up candles in order to create the same idea as unity candles have. You could have each family provide some colored sand from a special location. This could be from a family holiday or just from the family home.

Mix the colored sands together in a beautiful glass jar. You can even provide a smaller jar of the mixed sand for both parents as well.

The above ideas are really fun and unique twists on the unity candle. This is a nice addition to your wedding ceremony and it is a beautiful way to celebrate your love.
